The analysis group Oryx recorded that Russia has already lost more than 4,000 tanks in the war against Ukraine since the start of the large-scale attacks in February 2022.

These losses include tanks destroyed, abandoned, or captured, all confirmed by photos or videos. Since only visually documented cases are counted, the actual number of losses may be even higher.

In addition to tanks, Oryx estimates that more than 22,000 Russian military equipment have been destroyed, including armored vehicles, artillery, and aircraft. Many abandoned tanks may have been destroyed or taken by Ukrainian forces, but are counted as a single loss to avoid duplication. Tanks whose origin cannot be confirmed are not included in the count.

Even before the large-scale war, between 2014 and 2021, Russia had already lost at least 50 tanks in fighting in Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, by the end of May 2025, the total number of Russian tanks destroyed or captured reaches 10,864, with more than 22,000 other armored vehicles out of combat.

The latest captured Russian tank, a T-72B3, was seized by Ukrainian marines in November last year.
